ARTcetera 2003

ARTcetera 2003 was held on Friday, September 19 in the Harbor Side Ballroom of the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.  Barb Klatzky and Charlie Johnson, co-chairs of ARTcetera 2003, headed an enthusiastic committee of tireless volunteers to create a spectacular event. A generous donation by committee member, Aubrey Danielson, of an original brush and ink by revered regional artist, George Morrison, was the signature artwork for the event.  An outpouring of community generosity caused the expansion of the silent auction to over eighty items including a wide selection of jewelry, regional art and a collection of local pottery.  A highlight of the silent auction was a set of ten silk ties painted by community members under the instruction of silk painter, Lee Zimmerman.  The exquisite auction displays and delightful company made it difficult for the nearly full house of 232 guests to end the social hour.  But the gourmet dinner by chef Paul Madsen featuring chef-carved tenderloin of beef, grilled sugar cane shrimp and Canadian walleye cakes and chef-sautéed roasted butternut squash ravioli made them happy they did!  Auctioneer Karen Lee Sorbo returned from the Twin Cities area to auction off 56 luxury items, including an exclusive hunting trip to Argentina, an Italian diamond ring and private cooking schools in select Duluth homes to an eager and charitable crowd.

After expenses, ARTcetera 2003 raised over $116,000 that will be contributed to a fund that was begun with last year’s ARTcetera to provide an array of services involved in comprehensive cancer care.  Comprehensive cancer care includes the “high-tech” of advanced technology, as well as the “high touch” patient services that make the difficult journey easier.  These services help patients physically, but also provide a continuum of special services that assists the patient in understanding their disease, navigating the treatment process and dealing with complex emotional, physical and spiritual issues.  By providing comprehensive cancer care to the region, we bring a new hope of improved health and well being for our family, friends, and community members who face a personal battle with cancer.
